It all depends on the stage textile. Stage textiles such as molton, scenery canvas or voile influence the appearance and acoustics on events. They contribute to effective lighting and undisturbed listening pleasure, enhance the value of rooms and ensure that actors and spectators feel comfortable. They also create the conditions for you to realise your creative ideas, on and in front of the stage. 

It is important, that you choose the right technical stage fabric. We can give you a overview of the most important stage textiles and their properties.

IMPORTANT PROPERTIES OF STAGE TEXTILES

Depending on the purpose, stage textiles are particularly robust, opaque or transparent, light or heavy. Some decorative fabrics and textiles for events absorb light and sound. In this way, they support effective lighting and good acoustics. This applies for example to molton fabrics.

Especially important: decorative fabrics, stage curtains, backdrops or fabrics used in event technology must be flame retardant. Our textiles meet these requirements by the reference to DIN 4102 B1, EN 13501-xx and other standards. In some other cases, for example at trade fairs, sprinkler-compatible textiles with VDS certification are required.

OVERVIEW OF DIFFERENT STAGE TEXTILES AND THEIR PROPERTIES

Molton or Velvet? Gauze or nets? We will help you make the right decision.

Molton fabric - flexible in use

At theatre hall or an open-air stage, a trade fair or a photo studio, you'll find molton almost everywhere. There are good reasons for this: 

- Light-absorbing: Molton absorbs the light from spotlights and other lighting sources. It prevents reflections and thus ensures that lighting effects at venues come into their own.

- Sound-absorbing: The same applies to sound. However, it depends on the type of molton. Stage molton particularly supports good acoustics and shortens reverberation times. 

- Screening: As a densely woven fabric, black stage molton is particularly suitable for screening areas from view or darkening rooms. 

While stage molton has a high technical value in event technology, the lighter decorative molton is popular for design purposes.

Satin molton differs from other molton fabrics in that this molton variant is not made with a body weave, like classic stage molton. Instead, it consists of a shiny satin weave that is only roughened on one side. The other side has an elegant sheen. This makes this molton fabric particularly suitable for inexpensive stage curtains with an elegant look. Westholt offers satin molton and classic stage molton exclusively in premium quality cotton or polyester. 

Scenery canvas: light but stable

Modern scenery cotton muslin, are made of the best quality cotton on the market. They are characterised by a high tensile strength and an absolutely even structure. Cotton scenery  mulsin fabrics can be dyed in our textile finishing department according to customer requirements, even in small quantities. (min. 30 running metres) In addition to scenery cotton canvas fabrics, Westholt offers variants made of polyester. These usually have an integrated washable flame retardant. Unfortunately, however, they cannot be dyed afterwards.

Ultra wide scenery muslin is versatile. The fabric is often used for horizons, shirtings or light installations. At trade fairs, seamless coverings an walls made of seamless scenery muslin are common. Sheer muslins are particularly fine and semi-transparent, falling easily and flowing. In contrast, canvas, heavy canvas and scenery canvas are opaque.

Important: Many of our scenery cotton fabrics and other stage textiles are impregnated to be flame retardant. If you wash the textiles, the flame protection is lost. The impregnation would then have to be professionally renewed.

Gauzes and nets - tight or fine mesh

Horizons, veils or ceiling coverings? With WILHELM WESTHOLT you will find gauzes and nets in many variations. These include the classic sharkstooh, with its unmistakable look and possible use on the theatre stage, or fine bobinet gauze, that can be made almost invisible, as well as tensionable square gauze. Especially for use at trade fairs, our square qauze and some of our nets are sprinkler-compatible according to VdS G 413045 and flame-retardant according to DIN or EN.

Velvet fabrics - for a noble look and good acoustics

If the look has to be particularly classic, velvet is the excellent choice. Velvets today are usually made of cotton or polyester rather than silk. A characteristic feature of velvet is the pile, which is created by a special weaving process. In addition, velvet absorbs light and sound and is opaque; some variants are also almost light-proof. This means that stage velvet also has a positive effect on room acoustics, for example by minimising reverberation and shortening reverberation times.
